Hey all, welcome back to my weekly CLE's College Football Corner column.
What a Week 5 it was for the college football world:
• Alabama showed us all that, yes, there is life after Nick Saban. That first-half performance was one of the best halves of football I've seen in a while, especially considering who the opponent was.
• Also, let's start the great debate about who will be the first wide receiver taken in the 2027 NFL draft. Jeremiah Smith and Ryan Williams are amazing talents, and we should feel blessed to be able to watch them for the next two and a half years.
• The Big 12 looks completely up for grabs, and while I'm not a huge fan of them, I was extremely impressed with Colorado’s performance vs UCF on Saturday. Travis Hunter is easily one of the top three Heisman candidates right now (not a shocking statement there).
•Who knows what version of Utah we get the rest of the year. They have to get some sort of resolution on this Cam Rising QB situation.
•Kansas St goes from laying an egg in Provo, Utah, to blowing out Oklahoma St on Saturday. As I said, the Big 12 is wide open, and it will be interesting to see who gets that four seed in the CFB Playoff.
The biggest losers of the week:
• Ole Miss for just no-showing vs. Kentucky.
• Utah and its continued QB shuffle are causing issues within their offense.
• And finally, Florida St. for the final nail in the coffin for their season being hammered in at SMU.
Now, my thoughts on Week 6:
• Does anyone get caught looking ahead? I'm looking at you: Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, and USC. All four have extremely winnable games this week, but does anybody get tripped up before next week?
• From a gambling standpoint, in the only ranked vs. ranked matchup, I feel the wrong team is favored in the Mizzou Texas A&M game. I like Missouri off the bye to finally get it going this season and get the win at College Station.
• My favorite total of the weekend takes place in Columbia. I feel like we get a big bounce-back performance from the Ole Miss offense on the road here in South Carolina. USC has really only played one good offense this year, and it was LSU who put 36 on them. Also, I think the Gamecocks can move it on Ole Miss. If you take out the Week 1 stinker performance vs. ODU, the South Carolina offense is averaging 38 points per game. Give me the over 53 in that one.
• Other Leans for this week: Syracuse vs. UNLV over, Ohio St TT over, Georgia vs. Auburn under, Washington ML and Miami -10.5.
Lastly, here is my top 25 heading into Week 6:
1. Ohio St
2. Alabama
3. Texas
4. Tennessee
5. Georgia
6. Oregon
7. Miami
8. Penn St
