Chiefs Worth Sprinkling on in the Super Bowl MVP Market
Just as we did with the Eagles, here are our three favorite non-QB Super Bowl MVP bets for the Chiefs:
Travis Kelce (+1000)
Just because he’s the obvious choice, doesn’t make him the wrong pick. Philadelphia’s defense is strong at every level, but it’s hard to see any of the Kansas City receivers having a good enough game against Darius Slay, James Bradberry and Avonte Maddox in the secondary to garner serious consideration for Super Bowl MVP. The Eagles have long failed to invest a lot of defensive resources in linebacker and while Maddox and CJ Gardner-Johnson will likely be tasked with matching up with Kelce, it may not matter who Philly tries to match up with Kelce. The standout tight end has 21 catches for 176 yards and three touchdowns in two playoff games already. The combination of Kelce’s stardom with matchup advantages for Philly on the outside against a wounded Chiefs WR room makes me think that Mahomes isn’t going to be able to spread it around enough for him to be the runaway choice for voters if Kansas City wins.
Chris Jones (+4000)
There’s no one left on the offensive side of the ball that I want to make a case for with the Chiefs so I’m going to advocate for their best defensive player. Jones was exceptional against Cincinnati in the AFC Championship game with four total tackles and two sacks. While the Eagles are very good in the trenches on both sides of the ball, the interior of their offensive line could be a bit more exploitable. Guard Landon Dickerson is going to be playing with a brace on his right elbow after hyperextending it in the NFC Championship game. It’s going to be imperative for Kansas City to force Philadelphia into some more obvious passing downs and stop the run, which is something that both New York and San Francisco struggled with in the previous two rounds versus the Eagles. Should the Chiefs have more success on early downs on defense, it will almost definitely be due to Jones wreaking havoc.
Frank Clark (+8000)
The Eagles offensive line features pro bowl right tackle Lane Johnson and pro bowl alternate left tackle Jordan Mailata. Whomever Steve Spagnuolo decides to match Frank Clark up against is going to be a tall order for the veteran edge defender. However, who’s to say he won’t be up for it? Clark has delivered under the brightest lights for the Chiefs ever since joining Kansas City having posted an impressive 20 tackles, 10.5 sacks and one fumble recovery in 11 playoff games dating back to 2019. I almost always bet at least one edge rusher in the Super Bowl MVP market each year because next to quarterback, that’s the one position that can impact the game the most. We’re getting 80-1 here with the best edge defender on the Chiefs who’s going to have to have a huge game against those Philly tackles to even be in consideration for the award. It’s worth a couple bucks.
