In my opinion, this is the best sports week of the year. The first NFL week. College football is in week 2 with several great matchups. We don’t have to watch WNBA highlights on ESPN. (Well, in theory).
What to expect as a sports fan
Some great matchups in college football. Texas visits Alabama in the game of the week. A&M plays Miami in what should be a good one. There are also a couple sneaky good matchups as Oregon travels to Texas Tech and Utah faces Baylor. Oregon and Utah come off big wins, and Tech and Baylor had embarrassing losses. Wisconsin plays a tricky one at Washington State, and Ole Miss and Tulane could be a very interesting matchup. Keep the remote ready so you can bounce around!
In the NFL, everything starts with Chiefs-Lions. The Lions are getting a lot of love and rightfully so with an amazing offense and improving defense. But the Chiefs - even without Travis Kelce and Chris Jones - are still the champs. This should be a high scoring, exciting game to start the season.
Some other sexy games this weekend: Is Deshaun Watson back? The Browns get a tough test against Joe Burrow and the Bengals. The Sean Payton era begins in Denver as the Broncs take on what appears to be a fading Raiders team under overrated coach Josh McDaniels. The Giants and Cowboys kick it off with old rivals who hope to challenge the Eagles in the NFC East (good luck with that) and the hyped Aaron Rodgers Jets take on a team everyone seems to be forgetting in the AFC, Buffalo.
Other underrated games: The Packers begin the Jordan Love era against the Bears, the sneaky good Rams face a popular dark horse in Seattle, and Dolphins-Chargers should be fun as well.
All in all, this should be a great weekend.
What to expect as a sports bettor / gambler
Value, value, value. Week two of college football allows us to use week 1 as a reference. The NFL is more guesswork, but there are plays to be made. As for college, Rice is plus-9.5 against a Houston team that struggled on offense in a 17-14 win over an underrated UTSA team.
The Owls hung in with a good Texas team in week 1 and have enough weapons to keep it close against a team that doesn’t blow people out. Tulane is getting outside a touchdown at home against Ole Miss at plus 7.5. The Wave might be the best group of five team. And we have one more - our best bet below.
As far as the NFL, the Steelers are home dogs against a San Francisco team that has questions at quarterback, has lost a lot on the coaching end over the last couple years and gets the negative body clock.
I like Steelers +2.5, but shop around and see if you can get to the key number of +3.
Also, let’s play against the hype and take Bills -2.5 over the Jets.
Best Bet: SMU +15.5 vs. Oklahoma
I've thought OU was overrated all offseason. The fact that they put up 73 against the worst FBS team out there gives us some added value with a solid SMU team that can score. We will learn a lot about OU here.
Good luck with your plays!
