We're back with another edition of “CLE Totals.” Last time we talked about the NFL, was on Thanksgiving when we cashed the Cowboys Team Total against the Giants. This week we head to Detroit for a NFC North battle battle between the Lions and the Vikings.
The Vikings come into this one with a 10-2 record on the season. They are currently in 1st place in the NFC North, coming off a dramatic 27-22 win against the Jets last week. If the playoffs started today, they would be your #2 seed in the NFC. The Lions come into this one with a 5-7 record. They have been playing very good ball as of late, winning 4 of their last 5 games, following a 40-14 thrashing of the Jaguars last Sunday in the Motor City. They are currently in 2nd place in the NFC North and are on the outside looking in in the NFC Playoff race as they sit in 8th place in the conference.
There is a saying in the NFL betting world that "you shouldn’t bet on in-division overs." Well, I say forget that adage as we have two excellent offenses going at it on Sunday. The Vikings are 6-5 to the over this season, including 3-1 to the over in their last four games. The Lions are 8-4 to the over this year, 5-2 to the over at home, and 2-0 to the over as the betting favorite (as they are currently a 2-point favorite in this one).
The Vikings offense is averaging 25.9 points per game since Week 3, while their defense has fallen off in the last month giving up an average of 29.5 points per game in the last four games. That last point is significant because the Lions offense has been phenomenal the last few weeks as they have been averaging 31.75 points in their last four games. Throw on top of it, the Lions offense has been great at home as well with a similar 31.8 points per game at Ford Field. Games at Ford Field have been like scoring on a pinball machine averaging 59.71 points in the last seven games there. I fully expect Jared Goff, Kirk Cousins, and Justin Jefferson to continue the trend of lighting up the score board on Sunday. Also, keep in mind, four out of the last five matchups in this series have gone over this number.
